Position OverviewNew, full‑time, regular hire entry‑level Communications Dispatcher trainees are eligible for a $5,000 signing bonus, paid in two equal installments: 50% at time of hire and the remaining 50% after successfully completing the probationary period.The Marin County Sheriff's Office partners with the community to provide public safety. Communications Dispatcher trainees work in the Communications Center, receive on‑the‑job training in routine and emergency public safety communications, and upon completion of the probationary period are expected to advance to Communications Dispatcher, where they perform the full range of assigned duties.ResponsibilitiesCall‑take and radio dispatch public safety equipment for law enforcement, emergency medical services and the public.Respond to routine and emergency incidents, dispatching equipment, and coordinating resources.Maintain accurate logs and relay written and oral messages exactly as received.Utilize CAD and other computer systems to record and manage incidents.Follow written and oral directions, operate communications center software and learn operating procedures.Exercise judgment and discretion in resolving problems.Learn the geography of Marin County, including cities, highways, main streets and major buildings.QualificationsSpeak clearly and concisely in English.React quickly, efficiently and calmly in emergency situations, adopting an effective course of action.Dispatch public safety equipment in a coordinated manner.Follow written and oral directions; relay messages exactly as received.Learn to operate computer terminals, including CAD software, and maintain written radio logs and other records.Exercise judgment and discretion in resolving problems.Have strong interpersonal skills and good judgment; be honest and trustworthy.Minimum RequirementsMust be at least 18 years of age.High‑school graduate or equivalent.One year of experience involving heavy public contact and multitasking; experience within a law‑enforcement, fire, emergency medical or similar public agency desirable.Certifications and Special RequirementsPossession of, or ability to obtain, a California Commission on Peace Officer Standards & Training (POST) Public Safety Dispatcher Basic Certificate within 18 months of appointment.Failure to obtain and/or maintain the POST certificate will result in termination of employment.Pass pre‑employment controlled substance use standards, background investigation, polygraph or computer voice stress analyzer examination, medical exam, and job‑simulating psychological assessment.Applicants indicating felony convictions will not be accepted as per California law.Equal Employment OpportunityThe County is an equal opportunity employer.
