The Copy Editor is responsible for editing copy that appears in VIZ Media's print and digital publications—including chapters, graphic novels, trade books, novels, catalogs, and promotional materials—for errors of grammar, spelling, punctuation, clarity, accuracy, and completeness. The Copy Editor implements the guidelines for the overall quality and style standards of VIZ Publishing products.What you'll doCopyedit lettered pages of graphic novels, simultaneous serializations, manuscripts, and any other assigned text for accuracy and clarityProofread mechanicals and layouts of covers and miscellaneous text for graphic novels and other booksProofread bluelines of interior pages and miscellaneous text for graphic novels and other booksCheck for consistency and integrity of layout elements, including art, logos, ISBNs, and pricesEnforce and update in-house style guides, consulting the Chicago Manual of StyleMake recommendations to editors and designers to arrive at the best solutions for narrative flow and legibilityAutonomously manage workflow and set project priorities, meeting departmental production schedule deadlines while accommodating ad‑hoc rush projectsWork with Copy Chief to identify and address any issues affecting the copyediting and proofreading stages of the Publishing production processProcess books for reprinting, coordinating with Production and Publishing Operations staffThe ideal candidate has3+ years of copyediting experience, preferably in a publishing environmentExcellent English language skills, including knowledge of grammar and styleProfessional experience with standard style guides such as the Chicago Manual of StyleExperience creating style sheetsAbility to improve copy and maintain continuity in assigned projectsAbility to make both business‑oriented and creative judgmentsStrong attention to detailEffective time managementBachelor's Degree in English, Journalism, Creative Writing, Comparative Literature, Communications, or related fields from an accredited college or university, or equivalent experienceAdditional preferred skills/knowledgeKnowledge of book publishing, comics, manga, or animeExperience with Adobe AcrobatWork Environment & ScheduleLocation: The Copy Editor position is open to candidates local to the San Francisco Bay Area.
